Dear Pastor,
God’s grace does the unexpected. Grace is God’s undeserved love for sinners that showed itself most profoundly in the sending of the eternal Son of God to live a holy life and suffer the punishment of hell in our place. Responding to that grace does the unexpected as well. In 2 Corinthians 8:2, Paul refers to the grace-produced generosity that the Macedonian Christians displayed. And our WELS congregations, despite the difficulties we have been facing the past couple of years, have provided record-setting offerings toward WELS’ gospel ministry two years in a row.
Only the Lord knows whether that trend with continue. That’s why the Conference of Presidents is urging congregations to consider what you can commit to our synod’s worldwide kingdom work. Because grace does the unexpected, you can consider maintaining or increasing your mission offering to WELS even when the future is uncertain.
If you are looking for some direction in setting your subscription, please work toward setting your CMO at ten percent of anticipated offerings and then increasing your congregation’s offering as you are able.
As part of this process, review and share with church leaders and, ideally, all members of the congregation, the CMO setting materials including a special video featuring WELS president Mark Schroeder reflecting on the blessings and opportunities that the Lord Jesus is giving our synod.
Please submit a solid subscription (that your congregation can confidently strive to attain) using the 2023 CMO subscription web form by Fri., Feb. 3, 2023, at noon (Central).
If you have any questions about this process, please contact our Ministry of Christian Giving (MCG) district chairman, John Hildebrandt ([email protected]) or the MCG office (call 414-256-3209/800-827-5482 or e-mail [email protected]).
May our Lord God richly bless your congregation and our synod as we join to prepare gospel proclaimers and then send them out into fields that are ripe for the harvest!
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael T. Jensen
